Lots of the right stuff - details and examples - and a Real Deal!

I am a software developer over 15 years experience. I wanted a book that would cover the Android development / programming environment in fairly complete depth and with good breadth. A lot to ask! I started with another popular Android book and found it was a good introduction but lacking in details. What's with that "@+id" stuff, for example; the book never mentioned how to interpret it. So I went searching for better and found this book. It is both reasonably comprehensive (but not an encyclopedia) and reasonably broad. The examples are well focused and presented well (e.g., you know what the example is supposed to look like and behave like). What's really made me happy is how the publisher handles the ebook versions of their books. They have 4 Android tomes (Busy Coder's Guide To Android, BCG to Advanced, a tutorial, and a performance book). If you pay for the ebooks (sign up on line; costs about as much as one book), you not only get the ebook for the paper book you purchased, but you also get access to all 4! And no DRM - epub and pdf versions. AND they are continually updating the books (each book has a version number!) and you have access to all updates for the duration of your subscription. This is a great deal from my point of view. They have other niceties as well - e.g., you can trade in your (gently used) paper book and get credit. Also have a bug bounty program that earns you chits for extending your subscription. Highly recommended!

Check into the author's site before u buy if you like ebooks.

Good book, but to be honest I havent dug into it too deeply yet. Been hopping through a number of print and electronic android books lately.

If you like e-reading look at the author's web site and such and you will find a better digital version. After buying the book, I also signed up for the digital version because it is twice as comprehensive and continually updated. While I am comfortable with e-books, I still like to crack open a book and have it by my side.

Excellent resource for imtermediate and advanced developers

This review is one Android developer's opinion, and I am not affiliated with any publisher or author.
Unlike the other two advanced books I purchased, this book lives up to its title.

I bought the hard copy to have as a reference on my desk.
Any one of the samples by itself is worth the price of the book.

The book is written with an assumption that you know how to write a basic program on your own, hence is centered on more advanced topics, and is well detailed in code, which is the best way for a coder to understand the solutions.

Perhaps to figure out what a @id or an intent is, I can see more introductory Android Programming book(s) from same, or other authors, or Google Android references online.

However, if you have read all the introductory books and are looking for a more advanced book, this is the best advanced book in its class.

If you are planning on advancing your work over time to the level of "one of the top downloaded apps" in the Android Market, the SDK and the references may well fall short of how to actually extend the art to achieve a world class look, feel, and performance and this book with its extensions and libraries, is for you.

About the Author

Aldous Huxley (1894-1963) was an English writer and editor of Oxford Poetry. He interests included parapsychology and philosophical mysticism, and he is known in many academic circles as a leader of modern thought. He is the recipient of both the James Tait Black Memorial Prize and the Companion of Literature by the Royal Society of Literature. His many works include Brave New World, Themes and Variations, and The Genius and the Goddess.

Love Huxley

I generally don't like short stories but I gave this book a try due to having a literary soft spot for Aldous Huxley (and an admiration for his grandfather, Thomas). Although this was not my favorite Aldous Huxley book -- perhaps because it consists of short stories -- and although I disliked the characters and the endings to the stories, I can only credit the writer's ability to make me feel these emotions. As always, the writing moves along well and has interesting twists to keep the plots going along at a good clip, despite my distaste for the people and the events. The man was, simply, an excellent writer.

Huxley is wonderful.

I have read quite a bit by Huxley, but never his short stories. Many of these are somewhat humorous and almost all end with a wonderfully anti climactic kind of shock, not to spoil them. I unfortunately missed the intended message or theme for a couple if the stories, but reading it was still a pleasure and that is not why I gave four stars. The four stars result from the simple fact that there are perhaps a little more than ten very minor non detracting typos or scan errors in the public domain version of this book.

"Stupidity or reason? Oh, there was no choice now. It was imbecility every time. 'Scendo' he called back to her. Twelve steps led from the garden to the terrace. Mr. Hutton counted them. Down, down, down, down.... He saw a vision of himself descending from one circle of the inferno to the next--from a darkness full of wind and hail to an abyss of stinking mud."

A five story collection, first published in 1922. Considerably more sustained and polished than the stories in Limbo - Short Stories by Aldous Huxley.

The Gioconda Smile is about a man with an invalid for a wife, a young lower-class woman for a mistress, and a spinsterish friend, Miss Spence, whom he finds he has underestimated.

Permutaions among the Nightingales is a story in the form of a play, where everyone seems to be in love with the wrong person:

"I perceive that the supreme quality in the human soul is effrontery. Genius in the man of action is simply the apotheosis of charlatanism. Alexander the Great, Napoleon, Mr. Gladstone, Lloyd George--what are they? Just ordinary human beings projected through the magic lantern of a prodigious effrontery and so magnified to a thousand times larger than life. Look at me. I am far more intelligent than any of these fabulous figures; my sensibility is more refined than theirs, I am morally superior to any of them. And yet, by my lack of charlatanism, I am made less than nothing. My qualities are projected through the wrong end of a telescope and the world perceives me far smaller than I really am. But the world--who cares about the world? The only people who matter are the women.
PAUL. Very true, my dear Dolphin. The women.... (He looks at the cheque and mops himself once more with his mauve silk handkerchief.)

The Tillotson Banquet is about a nobleman who throws a charity banquet for a 97 year old artist. It is remarkably funny and grim at the same time.

At the sight of Spode and Mr. Tillotson emerging from the house a yell of mingled awe and derision went up. It subsided to an astonished silence as they climbed into the car. "Bomba's," Spode directed. The Rolls-Royce gave a faintly stertorous sigh and began to move. The children yelled again, and ran along beside the car, waving their arms in a frenzy of excitement. It was then that Mr. Tillotson, with an incomparably noble gesture, leaned forward and tossed among the seething crowd of urchins his three last coppers.

Green Tunnels and Nuns at Luncheon are two more fine examples of Huxleyan point-counterpoint. The story of the nun is told by a female journalist to her young friend, the male narrator- she regards the nun ironically, the narrator regards her ironically, and I suppose the reader, or at least the writer, gets as it were, triple distance:

"By the way," said Miss Penny, changing her tone and leaning confidentially across the table, "I wish you'd tell me something. Tell me, do you really honestly, I mean do you seriously believe in literature?"
"Believe in literature?"
"I was thinking," Miss Penny explained, "of Ironic Fate and the quacking of the Norns and all that."
" 'M yes."
"And then there is this psychology and introspection business; and construction and good narrative and word pictures and le mot juste and verbal magic and striking metaphors." I remembered that I had compared Miss Penny's tinkling ear-rings to skeletons hanging in chains. "And then, finally, and to begin with Alpha and Omega there's ourselves: two professionals gloating, with an absolute lack of sympathy, over a seduced nun, and speculating on the best method of turning her misfortunes into cash. It's all very curious, isn't it?- when one begins to think about it dispassionately."
"Very curious," I agreed. "But, then, so is everything else if you look at it like that."
"No, no," said Miss Penny. "Nothing's so curious as our business. But I shall never get to the end of my story if I get started on first principles."

Donald E. Westlake is one of the greats of crime fiction. Under the pseudonym Richard Stark, he wrote twenty-four fast-paced, hardboiled novels featuring Parker, a shrewd career criminal with a talent for heists. Using the same nom de plume, Westlake also completed a separate series in the Parker universe, starring Alan Grofield, an occasional colleague of Parker. The third Grofield novel, The Blackbird shares its first chapter with Slayground: after a traumatic car crash, Parker eludes the police, but Grofield gets caught. Lying injured in the hospital, Grofield is visited by G-Men who offer him an alternative to jail, and he finds himself forced into a deadly situation involving international criminals and a political conspiracy.

Grofield, Alan Grofield - Shaken Not Stirred

"The Blackbird" continues Richard Stark's (AKA Donald Westlake) desire to spread out the genre umbrella a little bit without fundamentally changing his main meal ticket, Parker. Instead he uses the adventures of easy going and likable Alan Grofield to move the Parker-verse in some different directions. In the previous Grofield book, "The Dame," Grofield becomes wrapped up in a classic, locked door parlor mystery, a la Agatha Christie. In "The Damsel" Grofield lives out a rousing action romance. In this one, published in the late 60's, he channels Ian Fleming and sees how Grofield stacks up against James Bond.

As with all the Parker books, we encounter characters we have met before giving Stark new ways to build up these minor characters. After a botched armored car robbery (also chronicled in Slayground which was written first but published later), Grofield is captured and involuntarily put to work by a super secret arm of the government in exchange for his freedom. Grofield would much rather escape, but is unable to do so under the thumb of relentless secret agents. Why is Grofield the man for the job? Simple. He has a close relationship with several of the subjects of interest, all of whom we know from previous Grofield stories.

Without giving too much of the plot away, Grofield becomes involved in a classic Bondian adventure with all the accompanying danger, hot chicks and world-wide disaster implications. The story is far more like Bond cinema than Bond books. Unlike Bond who always worked for Queen and Country, Grofield is only looking out for himself. As his involvement in the international plot becomes more tangled the two motivations, country and self, intersect.

There is a substantial maturing of Grofield in this novel, especially from when we first meet him in "The Score." Although he remains his charismatic self throughout the novel, he does several very cold things which would force even Parker (and Bond) to raise an eyebrow. The novel is fast paced and a very quick read. I haven't found a Parker-verse book I haven't liked yet (I'm reading through them chronologically) and this one though radically different from what I've come to expect, is still a great read.

Entertaining

It seems almost anything Donald Westlake writes is a pure joy to read. This one was no exception.
In fact, I've even re-read some of his novels several times when I gave up in getting another good
author. Not only is a good man hard to find, so is an author.

Grofield does Bond, Westlake blows Stark's cover

Chapter one of The Blackbird is similar to chapter one of Slayground: A Parker Novel (Parker Novels)- the same heist told from Grofield's point-of-view. Grofield is a professional, but he is not like Parker, as soon becomes apparent:

"You've got a small army here, you don't need me. What your problem is, you don't want the rest of the team to know one of their number's been bumped off. You get little morale problems like that often?"
"I hope you screw up, Grofield," Ken said. "I hope you screw up so bad I get the order to take you right back and turn you in for that armored car job."
"And let the Third World capture Peoria? Move over, Ken, I'm off to save my country from the pygmies."
Ken moved over. "You cynical b*stard," he said.
Grofield stopped with his hand on the knob. "If I don't come back from this mission," he said dramatically, "I want you to tell the folks back home. Tell them to be on their guard. Tell them to--tell them to--watch the skies!" He went out chuckling, and Ken slammed the door behind him.

This Richard Stark is not in the 'quartet' form- there is no shift in the middle to other points of view. It is a very creditable parody or pastiche of a Bond adventure, with a stark twist in one chapter (nobody does it better), and Westlake's dry humor on display quite often. He seems willing in this outting to blow 'Stark's' cover:

... He sat up, stiff and aching and bruised all over. He called, "Vivian?"
Somebody groaned. He got to hands and knees.
"Groan again," he called.
She groaned again. He crawled in that direction, and touched wet cloth. He slid his hand along the cloth and said, "Vivian?"

"Why? What have I got?"
"So far, leg."
He patted it. "You sound like you're all right," he said.

Decent, but not as enjoyable as the film.

This is a novel based very closely on the original King Kong film (or was it the other way around?). It follows very closely the plot of the movie, with a few minor differences. This edition includes a few nice illustrations as well. I read this book before watching the movie, and while it's a decent novel, this is one case where I think the movie is better.

Kong History

The previous reviewer was talking about another edition of this novel--one that she had checked out of the library several years back--NOT the book at hand. She's right that the story is a bit dusty, the writing clunky--but at the same time, it's a rip-snorting, page-turning adventure yarn about "the eighth wonder of the world." It's a look back at entertainment from another time (70 years back, actually), and though it may be a tad creaky (like the original SHADOW or DOC SAVAGE stories), it's still a lot of fun. We're not talking Literature here, but Lovelace did a good job of turning Merian Cooper's and Edgar Wallace's screenplay into an enjoyable romp of a book. Joe DeVito and Brad Strickland have done a great job of revising the story and smoothing out the rough spots in a book from another publisher (you can find it on Amazon, too), but the original still has a lot of charm and magic all its own. Skull Island is full of mystery and wonder and dinosaurs and heroes and a plucky heroine and one humungous gorilla: what more could a young reader ask for?

What sets this bargain-priced trade paper edition apart from other reprints is the outstanding full color art by Jon Foster, Frank Frazetta, Dave Stevens, and Ken Steacy. Four distinctly different artists contribute four unique interpretations of Kong. It's a keeper.

Really, theres nothing worse than a boring adventure novel

I checked out the 1976 edition of this book about a year ago from the library. Ironic that it is coming out now because they are doing another Kong movie.

This doesn't surprize me, though, because the book is terse, slow, damn near impossible to read, and, ultimatiely, boring.

I love the original King Kong, but it seems that from the start, most of its tie-in and re-incarnations have been sup-par at best.

I recommend reading this for its historical interest - it is the ORIGINAL novelization - but the newer paper backs they are coming out with for the movie are probably much better.

Useful, concise, requires some background

I think this book certainly deserves its good reputation as a primer on the variations and developments of utility theory. It must be noted that the book requires a fair amount of mathematical background that students coming to choice theory from non-economic backgrounds might not have. The book may be almost inscrutable if you are not ready to think mathematically about choice an aren't familiar with mathematic-decision speak. To that reader, I would refer you to a book called "Thinking and Deciding" by Jonathan Baron and/or the Psychology of Judgment and Decision Making by Scott Plous. For a reader with a psychology background such as myself, those were much gentler introductions, although the material in this book is worth mastering if you want to do serious work in the field of decision making research.

Start thinking with a decision-theorist mind

The book seems harmless at the beginning with the mathematical proofs of some binary relations, which require a little bit of logic - and very careful writing down, if you have to turn in the problems as homework. But it gets more and more challenging - and pushes you to use some Real Analysis and Probability Theory concepts to really master the issues presented. This is not a reference book, nor a traditional textbook: it is a collection of lectures on economics of decision. The Von Neumann Morgernstern model is developed in all its magnitude, going further than any game theory textbook. You start to feel the 3 axioms and the numerical representation as second nature! But then, the Aumann/Anscombe and Savage models are introduced, as well as the limitations of the perfect VNM model. Everything you've learned seems to fall apart.
The problem sets are mainly excursions, in the very Kreps' style (if you have read his Course on Microeconomic Theory, you know what half a page problem without any equation is). In general, you don't need economics to get a good grip of the content: it is decision theory, not micro theory. Engineers and mathematicians will love it - and some economists will find it too tough!

I have read this book more than 10 times since I came across it. Every time I read this book, I find something new. This book is based on lecture notes on axiomatic choice theory presented by David Kreps(the author) at the Stanford University. If you want to major in economics, in particular, choice theory, this book will enable you to access this area very easily.
